As a child I was very good in mathematics, that I was able to recite the whole multiplication table in just one week. Then along came English, this was the area that I had the most difficulty. I had difficulty in spelling, writing and reading. As usual my parent where worried because they knew if I was not able to read and spell I was definitely not going to write well. So they tried different techniques to improve my reading and writing skills.
The first thing I remembered them trying to do was to get me to read more books. My parents were already convinced that I would not read anything complex and more than about 50 pages. So they decided to take another approach about the situation. I was the type of person who loved to watch Nancy drew, Scooby doo or any mystery cartoon I could find on television. Eureka! They had found the loop hole they needed and flooded the house with mystery novels. This actually worked and from there I was able to widen my scope of reading.
Although my parents had found a way to make me read more, I still did not know how to write and spell sufficiently. These two areas proved to be even more difficult for my parents to teach me. They threw in the towel and decided to hire a tutor. She was my very first tutor and the best. She came up with this amazing technique, which I will never forget, to teach me how to spell. She taught me to break up words into tiny fragments, which I would be able to actually remember. For instance, I had trouble spelling ‘together’ but she taught me to break it up like so ‘to-get-her’, since then I never forgot that word. After learning how to spell and read, I was able to write.
These were the things and people that taught me how to read and write. Although I am not the best writer, I have definitely come a long way.
